Oh, Guillered. You adorable thing you. You're perfect--you make everyone think you're sweet and innocent, who would never harm a fly, then BAM, the mask starts to come off, revealing what a poor, twisted creature you are. You heighten the sense of creepiness and fear, and yet manage to avoid being over-the-top. Your back-story just about breaks my heart, on top of it, and even though I'm putting you through hell, you're a great kid.
CURRENT CHARACTERS: Guillered Kirkland

Exhibit Number One.
NAME: Guillered Kirkland
AGE: Has the body of 13 year old, though his true age is 100+
SERIES: Laughter Land
SPECIES: Human
GENDER: Male
OCCUPATION: Clown
POINT OF CANON TO BE DRAWN IN: Right after he kills Richard for the first time.
PREFERRED LEVEL: Abyss
APPEARENCE:
He's just the sweetest little thing you've ever laid eyes on, with a penchant for bizarre fashion.
First off, he's small, about 4'11". He has a mop of dark brown hair that's a little too long -- bangs fall in his eyes rather than frame his round face -- and large eyes the same murky colour. Oddly enough, occasionally they look to be a peculiar shade of scarlet...but that's just a trick of the light, of course.
He looks, well, just like any other little boy. His frame is still padded with prepubescent fat, and he's not grotesquely thin, nor does he look overfed. Those long eyelashes and delicate hands make Guillered look like you could break him in half, really. Those tattoos on his cheeks -- a blue teardrop on the right, a red star on the left -- are the only remarkable features he has. And why would such a young boy have tattoos? Why, they're surely temporary; it's not as if they would have any special meaning, of course. And that gold staff he always carries around, the one that's longer than him? Just a toy, obviously.
Yes, he's normal, he's average, we get it, why are you telling us every detail of this boring-looking boy? Well, he's not entirely average and blah. See, Guillered's wardrobe is a bit...eccentric.
Atop that head rests a jester hat that's entirely too big on him, like the rest of his outfit that drowns that little body in a mess of gaudy colours. His sleeves are so long you can't even see his fingertips. A large brooch shaped like a spade is placed at his throat, to say nothing of the purple culottes, or the grey cloak patterned with red diamonds. Some of you might be wondering, what's with those clothes, is he hiding something? Guillered, hiding something? Don't be ridiculous.
He's just a normal little boy, remember?
PERSONALITY: [/b]
Immature to the core and increasingly emotionally unstable, Guillered doesn't grasp concepts like responsibility or work; to him, work should be play. What's wrong with having fun all the time?
Guillered is friendly to anyone who returns the favour. He doesn't mind talking about meaningless things for hours on end; he'll play any kind of game. Guillered generally acts in a light-hearted manner, even when he knows he's being lied to, as long as you stay with him. Please, please don't leave, all he wants is a friend, just one true, honest friend. Guillered is painfully lonely; he'll try his hardest to persuade someone to stay with him.
That is, until you betray him. And you will. All of his friends before have, it's never going to change. When crossed, he exposes a part of him that's highly cynical and pessimistic; Guillered doesn't give people a second chance. He becomes downright sadistic, and has no problem with stabbing someone to death with that staff of his. He just wants the starving, the miserable, the abused children to have fun and be happy, is that so bad? Why does an adult have to ruin everything?
You're either with him, or against him.
ABILITIES:
Erasing memories, manipulating time, teleporting, Guillered has an array of less than wholesome skills that belies his innocent appearance.
He can also shape shift into another form: that of a young girl with a frail appearance, pale blue hair tied up in twin tails and grey doll-like eyes. When Guillered takes on this form, he goes by the name Reece and his staff is replaced with an umbrella.
Whether you believe in magic or not, that's exactly what Guillered has control over. His abilities are granted by a little something called the Almandine jem, a piece of it embedded in his hand.
But if, for whatever reason, Guillered loses control of his magic (when the jem is cut out of his hand), then the time stopped within his body starts once more, and he'll revert back the age he actually is.
Once that happens, he'll be dead within minutes.
Only Greedy Children Wish.
HISTORY:
At first, it was just Guillered, his little sister Margaret, and his little brother Dag. And their honourable mother, of course. Mother was the one who raised them. Their father had disappeared before Guillered was born, and talking about him was taboo, a sin.
Guillered's mother was the leader, the shining goddess of the Noah cult, and she raised her children accordingly. Satan was after them, hush, stop crying, they must be pure and good and stop those followers of Satan from spreading their wicked, filthy lies about the Noah. Guillered, mother hasn't done anything wrong, mother is driving the sin from their bodies when she beats those people, mother is protecting them from Hell when she puts them in confinement, it was their fault for trying to leave, mother isn't taking money, she's saving those from being lured by Satan!
Guillered swallowed all of it, like the impressionable, gullible child he was. Yes, of course their honourable mother was only trying to do good. And this is how he grew up, following her teachings while his siblings, too young to comprehend much of it, trailed behind him.
Until one day.
Their mother was dressed in ceremonial garb, looking frantic as she shooed Guillered and his siblings into a closet, forbidding them to come out under any circumstances. It was almost as if she was hiding them from someone, but Guillered didn't get a chance to ask before his mother slammed the door in their worried faces.
Pressing his ear against the door, Guillered couldn't hear much of anything except the scraping of chairs and the low, buzzing murmur of the other sect members. Were they having a meeting? Guillered wanted so desperately to peek, but he stood firm by his mother's order. Hours later, his siblings too were getting anxious. Guillered could feel them shivering against him, they didn't sleep, they needed food, and just as he was about to go back on his decision not to look--
The closet door was flung open, flashlights blinding them as men wearing facemasks and holding guns flooded in, grabbing the children and trying to shield their eyes from the gruesome spectacle.
But Guillered saw all the same. The sect members, men and women, a sea of corpses, with only empty glasses left behind. And at the altar was his beautiful mother, on her knees as if in prayer but slumped lifelessly to the floor.
The police tried to tell Guillered that his mother was a bad woman who had committed many crimes, finally leading the Noah cult in mass suicide when the police had cornered her, but Guillered was in shock. Was everything a lie? Everything he had been taught, everything he had grown up with? Was his mother really...evil?
To add another loop on this sickening roller coaster his life had now become, Guillered and his siblings were placed in an orphanage. Where no one adopted them -- of course, who would want the children of a crazy ex-cult leader? -- and no one showed a shred of kindness to them. Guillered had to be the big brother protecting his siblings, even if he himself was confused and surrounded by so many sinners.
Lonely and bitter from the cruelty life had shown him, somewhere along the line Guillered decided his mother had been right. People were being lured by Satan, and he had to save them. Guillered wasn't being mean, when he whipped that girl he was only purifying her. But whether he was good or bad, there was one thing Guillered desired the most: happiness.
It was only a matter of time before he and his siblings ran away from the orphanage. They snuck into their old house and stole the Almandine jem, the sacred jem that his mother had based all her teachings on, that she claimed held a terrible and great power.
All he wanted was a place for him and his siblings to be happy, without all the confusion of rules and the chaos of adults, without hunger and fear and death.
The jem granted his wish, and thus, Laughter Land was born.
It started out as paradise. Here was a dream world, a place where no one had to suffer, a sanctuary to hide in, just for Guillered and his brother and sister. No one was better than anyone else, everyone got food and everyone played all the time and went to bed looking forward to the next day. Then Guillered got thinking: this was all wonderful for them, but what about other children who were starving or crying for help somewhere? They deserved to live in Laughter Land, just like he did. Soon enough, Guillered started travelling between Laughter Land and the real world, ferrying children across and giving them a new chance at life.
It turned out that after creating Laughter Land, the Almandine jem had shattered. Guillered gave each child a piece so they could have wishes granted whenever they wanted!
Perfect, right?
But giving the piece of jem to each child was also a way of keeping peace in Laughter Land. Adults had ruined their lives, so if any of the children started thinking like an adult, acting like an adult, their red gem would turn blue as a signal. Guillered could see everything that was going on in Laughter Land, so he would have no trouble finding the Blue, the adult, and punishing them. Not that he would ever need to worry about jems turning blue. In a sanctuary like this, who would want to grow up?
Or so he thought.
One day, Guillered brought two children to Laughter Land, a boy and a girl, Zack and Reesha. The three of them became close, and Guillered was overjoyed -- Two friends! He had never had friends before!
But Zack and Reesha became too close. One day, Guillered came visiting them, and was shocked to see Zack's -- his friend his best friend's -- jem had turned blue. Guillered discovered Reesha's gem was also blue, and not only that -- she was pregnant. She had betrayed him! They had betrayed him! They were his only friends and they ruined it!
Now, stop for a moment. There's a little something about those jems you don't know. The jems are not conscious creatures, but they have some sort of awareness, the basic instinct to increase their numbers. The jem cannot reproduce itself; however, it has a very simple survival tactic merely by granting a child's wishes. The children become dependant on their jems for food, shelter, anything -- why search for something when you could just wish for it? Lying dormant this whole time, it is only when they're so absolutely needed do the jems have their chance to multiply, by going on to their next stage: they become thinking creatures called 'nightmares', which actively prey upon the children that depended on them as jems, turning them into nightmares, too.
See where I'm going with this? Each child unwittingly carries around a monster that can be called into action by Guillered. The boy had a whole army at his disposal, but he never thought he'd have to use it.
He was wrong. Guillered instigated a mass slaughter of children, or Reds, furious at Zack and Reesha for forgetting about him. Whether they died in the massacre or not, Guillered didn't know -- he never saw either of them again.
Guillered eventually called off the nightmares, which returned to their dormant jem states. From then on, Guillered forbade all girls from entering Laughter Land, and he created a place called the Forbidden Zone, a place of terror and decay, where all the dregs of Laughter Land -- the Blues -- would be sent.
Did I say Laughter Land? It's real name is Slaughter Land; but keep quiet about it, it's not exactly public information.
His mother had been right. People were sinners. They would all betray him, sooner or later.
♠
Now, fast forward a hundred years or so. Guillered remained outwardly the same from when he first created Laughter Land, the same innocent smile and promises of fun forever. He was still spiriting away children, saving them from a miserable existence. Absolutely no incidents had occurred since ninety years ago; it had been peaceful in Laughter Land ever since.
When Guillered had brought a new boy to Laughter Land, he hadn't thought much of it. Just another salvaged life, another good deed.
Guess what? Turned out Richard 'Dick' McBain was more than just another kid. Somehow, somewhere along the line, his jem had turned blue. Promptly taken away to the Forbidden Zone, Guillered thought that was the end of it, completely forgetting about Dick.
And yet. Defying the odds, defying Guillered's expectations, Dick's jem had somehow returned to its luminous red state, and soon after he escaped the Forbidden Zone, hiding out in the home of some gullible Red. Instead of throwing him back in, Guillered decided to keep an eye on Dick, occasionally visiting him, making sure he didn't cause trouble.
Dick ended up causing more than a little mischief. Guillered visited him one evening, and discovered to his sickening shock that Dick's jem had turned blue once again. Not only that, but Dick apparently had this pesky little ability to revive the children's memories of the real world, those memories that Guillered had erased from their minds before bringing them to Laughter Land, so they could be free without the burden of a past.
Dick was ruining everything! He ruined his budding friendship with Guillered, and he ruined the happiness of those he had tried to help!
Guillered couldn't stand to let that happen. In his fury, in his cold shock that told him he should've expected this, Guillered lifted his staff and stabbed Dick through the stomach, leaving him to bleed to death.
He'd do things right the next time. He'd rewind time, to make sure those kids never remembered, to save them, to make sure he'd have a true friend this time, who wouldn't betray him. He would erase Dick's memories of what happened, and keep him by his side, always. Dick would be his friend, and stay his friend, forever. Even if Guillered had to kill him a thousand times.
That was what love was, right?
False memories:
It was amazing he survived as long as he had in the Abyss. Guillered was spawned from a one night stand and lived in a small, disgusting room in Seedy's Motel for most of his childhood, taking care of his siblings that turned two by the time he was six.
When his mother was not frequenting the Debauchery Den, Guillered was the sole audience to his mother's passionate, tearful, crazed speeches. His mother was convinced an evil being was trying to lead people astray, and Guillered was convinced as well, living his whole life seeing nothing but decay and wreckage, desperation and despair, gore and chaos.
"Now listen, mother is spreading the truth! She is doing all she can to save people, and tonight I plan to gather a group of followers. Guillered, you must not allow yourself to be tempted by sinners. " Those were the last words she said to him.
A week later, it was clear that Guillered's mother was not coming back. There was a rumour that, by the Abyss dump, the bodies of her and twenty others were found with bags over their heads...but it was just another couple corpses, so who really gave it much thought?
Without money, Guillered and his siblings were tossed out into the streets. Without food, they slowly began to starve to death. Without shelter, Guillered found himself forced to live in an abandoned warehouse, and that was a lesser degree of hell by only a fraction (rats weren't very notorious).
It was in the warehouse that he met a boy and girl – their names are Zack and Reesha, why does this seem so familiar? -- whom he quickly became close with, and together they formed a rather broken, fragmented family. Guillered was happy nonetheless --he had friends, for the first time ever.
When he tried to tell his friends about the Noah clan -- that good, innocent people were being warped, and how he was spreading the truth to save them -- he was met with backslash from his audience. They pointed out that whipping people was not a way to drive sin from their bodies, and trapping them was not a way to protect him; they said his way of thinking was twisted and wrong, that if his mother had wanted to help people she wouldn't have hurt them.
Guillered didn't understand. His honourable mother had only been -- trying to do good, right? She wouldn't do anything bad! If his mother was bad then he was bad! He had been wrong about everything? No, that didn't make sense!
They weren't his friends. They were sinners, they were traitors, they abandoned him and his cause; he just wanted to help, was that so bad? If they thought like him, if they were like him, they'd understand! But they were acting like adults now -- they said one thing and meant the other -- adults twisted everything, and ruined everything!
Some time later, it wasn't until he was standing in a pool of their blood did he realize the extent of his rather sinister abilities. He had heard his mother talk about a 'sacred jem', a piece of machinery capable of doing things far beyond the comprehensible; had the fragment embedded in his hand allowed him to do this?
Guillered just wished he could have a place without adults, without hunger and terror, where it was fun all the time. A place like...
Like a circus.
Yes, the Krank Schmutz Circus was lots of fun, with the happy tune that floated through the disease and decay of the Abyss signalling its arrival, the friendly colours that were so unlike the inky black and constant seep of scarlet. And the Circus fed Guillered, while all he had to do was wear a silly outfit and play around.
And sure, there were adults, but none of them acted like it. It was all smiles and flashes of sequins, fanfare and festivities -- and the buckets of gore, the screaming heard from the main tent? Well, those were adults, those were traitors being killed, the circus wouldn't hurt innocent people!
Except, well -- the circus is all fun and good, but what Guillered would really want is to attract more workers. He wants to help more children, and show them a fun life amidst the despair of the Abyss. Maybe he'll even have a friend; his first true friend, that is.
He just wants to help them, that's all.
SAMPLE:
Guillered had been eager to wait for his companion to arrive. It had seemed forever since he last had someone to play with, and in such an interesting stage, things were sure to be entertaining. He had earlier made his way to the filthiest depths of the Abyss, arriving at a deserted area that wasn't too trashed with debris to wait for his new friend.
He wasn't expecting things to go badly--not yet, anyway--but he still held his staff close, just waiting for the excitement to come. After all, what could be more fun that a game of hide-and-go-seek? There were so many places to choose from! The Abyss reeked of alcohol and rotting animals, chemicals and corpses, but that was alright, it only heightened the experience. Even without a moon or stars to illuminate his way, Guillered would surely cherish this game.
Stumbling over an unmoving, suspiciously human-sized lump, Guillered idly toed the dirt in faint boredom, a bright smile on his childlike face. Oh, the fun was just about to start. [/font]
A conclusion is simply the place
where one became tired of thinking.
