Cross Academy is attended by two groups of students: the Day Class and the Night Class. While the Day Class heads back to their dorms at sundown, the Night Class enters the Academy for lessons. But the students of the Night Class hide a terrible secret... the entire student body of the Night Class is occupied by vampires. Yuki Cross and Zero Kiryu attend the Day Class as Prefects, which hide their true role; they're the guardians of the school in order to protect the Night Class's secret from the Day Class.
Yuki was adopted by Kaien Cross, Headmaster of Cross Academy the day she was rescued by a Pureblood vampire, Kaname Kuran. Years later, Zero Kiryu was taken under their care after the assassination of his family by a Pureblood named Shizuka Hio. For four years, Zero was hiding a secret from Yuki. That secret was revealed the night Zero attacked Yuki by drinking her blood, revealing that he was a vampire. Shizuka Hio had not only killed his family, but had sank her fangs into him, making him turn into a vampire. But over the years he's known Yuki, he had been trying to fight back the vampire instincts within him.
Yuki later found out that Zero was slowly becoming a Level E vampire; a vampire that is slowly losing all will of thought and sanity, becoming a blood thristy beast that has to be destroyed from the face of the Earth. In order to not let this happen, Yuki became Zero's blood donor, hoping that it would slow the process. But instead, it only makes Zero slowly lose his sanity and his lust for blood starts to increase.
Later, Yuki and Zero encounter Shizuka Hio, the Pureblood who attacked Zero's family four years ago. Zero's younger brother, Ichiru, was by her side. It had turned out that Ichiru had betrayed his family and helped Shizuka assassinate his family. Before Zero could exact her revenge on Shizuka, she was killed by Kaname Kuran in order to protect Yuki. Devestated and angered by her death, Ichiru accused Zero of killing her and vanished. The knowledge of Shizuka's blood being the cure of saving Zero from becoming a Level E lingered, but now Zero was on the brink of becoming a monster. Now an evil that was trapped under the flow of time has awoken from its long slumber, and its thirst for vengence and blood was strong.
