How dare they.
How dare they.
Vexen was a Nobody. A Nobody. He was one of the original six of Organization XIII. He was one of the apprentices of Ansem the Wise. He'd had a hand in creating heartless. He'd lost his heart and survived -- er, well, for a while, but most importantly he'd made it back even after falling to oblivion a second time. Effectively, he'd cheated death twice. Oh, and let's not forget to mention that he managed to clone a human being.
Vexen had more knowledge about science, both learned and first-hand, than all of the students and all of the other teachers combined.
So why am I playing second fiddle?![/color]
You may remove Vexen's Tinted Goggles of Self-Importanceā¢ now.
I'd be willing to bet against Luxord that this other 'professor' couldn't tell the difference between a lemon and a tachyon capacitor. Thus saieth the indignant Vexen, and the indignant Vexen wasn't one to be persuaded otherwise. And that was precisely why he was currently storming down the halls with a look of vengeance on his face, determined to find out exactly how qualified this other science teacher was. Because clearly, there could only be one science teacher.
He came to a stop just before the classroom door, staring angrily at the entranceway through squinted eyes as if trying to decide whether that door should live or die.
Given the ferocity with which he slammed it open, he apparently decided the later.
"I demand to know who teaches this class."[/i]
That's it. No greeting. No introduction. Just a blizzard of self-importance.

Getting back into the rhythm of school was like surrendering to quicksand, letting the endless classes and homework and normalcy of it all suck him under. It only took a matter of days for him to feel like none of it had ever happened...like he hadn't given in to the darkness and spent an entire year paying for it--hadn't gone haywire searching for Sora and Kairi in every other world--hadn't both rescued and been rescued by his best friend.
Things could never go back to the way they used to be, at least. Riku knew that much, but Kairi acted like she could shove it under the rug and pretend it hadn't happened. Every time Sora brought it up meant a gentle change of subject, and every time Riku brought it up she shot him a look like he was piercing her personal bubble. But then...maybe she was trying to protect them both from the whispers that followed them in the halls. Sora never seemed to notice, but Riku had--and Riku would be busting skulls over it if the idiots who whispered weren't too stupid to see the harm in their words or too chicken to defend them.
At any rate, a change of locale was nice, even if it wasn't much of a change of pace. People here didn't seem quick to judge--for a while he'd seen a freaking green gym instructor around--and he doubted that he'd be faced with much skepticism if he talked about the other worlds. The classes were interesting enough, too--taught by people who actually seemed to have experience with what they were talking about, versus the teachers back in Destiny Islands who'd been raised on the same textbooks they taught out of. So Riku was particularly interested in the block reserved for science, except that a disgruntled blond woman the height of a lifeguard tower stormed past him in the hall and nearly knocked him into a passing silver-haired boy with dog ears. "Hey, watch it--!" Riku growled slightly belatedly, hating the frills of authority but knowing it'd be better not to challenge this person.
The stranger threw open the door to what Riku recognized as the science classroom and shrilled, in a voice that definitely wasn't female-- "I demand to know who teaches this class."
...No. Can't be him. I won't LET it be him. But that would be as effective as screaming at an avalanche, so Riku narrowed aquamarine eyes on this vestige of a tumultuous past. "You. What are you doing here?"

An all too familiar voice caught Vexen's attention just then, drawing him out of his indignant rage and causing him to turn his head. Really, what with the rest of the cacophony going on behind him, he more than likely wouldn't have even paid attention -- and it almost escaped him that he was the one being addressed, except that voice -- and the unspoken threat that it carried -- seemed so familiar...
Riku.
His eyes narrowed.
"Oh there you are! I've been looking for you so I could use you in the upcoming Science Fair." He sneered, abandoning the doorway to take a few steps closer -- just enough for his teacher's badge to become a little more visible. His gloved hand flicked it for emphasis.
"I should be teaching general science -- but no," he hissed, "That position was already taken. To think that for all of my credentials--"
Pausing, he tilted his head and gave Riku the sort of look a vulture would give some dying thing.
"...But just what are you doing here? A smirk pulled at his lips. "Surely one with a destiny such as yours would be off on some grand adventure, rather than spending time in...say...Chemistry?

Riku's skin crawled at the mention of the science fair--What, make another Replica and see who's stronger? Pfff--but he wasn't quite the same boy who'd shouted defiance at all of Oblivion and taken down Ansem within its confines. The darkness had hollowed him out in ways he still didn't understand--or maybe that was just age and experience.
That didn't keep his heart from sinking when he saw the teacher's badge. They HIRED this kook?! Is there something in the water around here or is this one of the Organization's plans? It was a little surprising to think of it as the Organization again--he and Sora had eliminated that detail, but if Vexen was back...
"...But just what are you doing here?" Vexen asked after a meaningless rant about classes that Riku hadn't cared enough to absorb. "Surely one with a destiny such as yours would be off on some grand adventure, rather than spending time in...say...Chemistry?"
"Destiny?" Riku scoffed contemptuously. "Like hell. I'm done with all that. Sora and I are just trying to go back to what we had, I don't think it's a lot to ask. So what are you doing getting involved again?" he demanded, voice rising back to that tone of mingled anger and suspicion. "Are there others? What are you planning now?!" He didn't completely expect to get answers, and not pulling out the Keyblade didn't make this a very interrogatory situation, but the stress of trying to meld back into society when something like this could just crop up again was getting the better of him.

"You're...done with destiny."
Vexen shifted his stance, heels together to emphasize his height, and donned a contemplative look as if Riku had just offered his theory on the meaning of life. In reality, he would be panicking right now if he had a heart; the very thought that the Keybearers no longer had any incentive to go smash some heartless meant that Kingdom Hearts would never come to fruition, and by extension...
Well, not that he was particularly interested in what the Organization was doing nowadays, if the rest of them were indeed alive at all. Vexen had made the switch to a much more mundane life the moment he found himself breathing again; cheating death was not a stunt he was wont to pull twice, after all, and he was certain from the very beginning that he could get his own heart back without the assistance of anyone else.
He hoped.
"All that we wanted was to go back to what we had." His gaze hardened just then, as if he could almost feel the flicker of jealousy that Even would have felt. "I believe that you and Sora have already made it clear that it is, in fact, 'too much to ask.'"
To suggest that he and Sora (indeed, Sora was still around?) could go on living like normal individuals, after cheating them out of their chances to do the same...
...It was a beacon of hope.
"Consider me done with your destiny as well." He took a step closer, leaning forward and practically enveloping Riku in his shadow. "As far as my new objectives are concerned, I expect to receive no interference from either you or Sora. Otherwise..."
His face split with an absolutely chilling grin.
"You will have a very, very difficult time passing Chemistry."

Riku blinked at that assertion and confusion appeared in his eyes for the first time. Go back to...? That's not what Ansem said! No reason why he should believe the word of a scientist who had created his double and conspired with the rest of the Organization to dupe Sora into serving them over the man who had helped him restore his best friend.
His eyes narrowed--because of course someone with no morals would have the gall to endanger Riku's perfect GPA--and he scoffed, pretending the threat didn't bother him as much as it did. "Chemistry was never my thing. Try again."
He straightened, shifting the bag on his shoulder, and appraised the scientist-come-teacher skeptically. He did say he was casting aside the same destiny--did that mean he'd left the Organization? "If you're not working with Xemnas anymore...fine. But if I see one Heartless running around this place, it's on your head," he said shortly, turning on his heel. Turning his back on an enemy probably wasn't the best idea, but Riku didn't exactly expect to get attacked in the middle of a school hallway and even if he did he was trusting his instincts and radius of arrogance and self-confidence to handle it.
True, Heartless weren't the only tell-tale sign of corruption afoot, but Riku would be looking into Vexen's reasons for being here regardless. While his moral compass was back on track, Riku knew there would always evil in the world and didn't see the point in trying to combat all of it. So if it didn't affect himself and Sora or wasn't applicable on a grand scale, he didn't want to get involved again.
Riku out.
