About the Roleplayer
Nickname: Rox
RP Experience: About one year, Intermediate level
About the Character
Name: Yoshiya “Joshua” Kiryuu
Age: Appears fifteen
Anime/Game/OC: Game: The World Ends With You
Personality: Joshua is a sarcastic little stinker. He’s extremely smart and uses that to put people down, generally seeing them more as tools than as actual individuals. In short he acts like a spoiled rich kid, used to the high life and mostly disinterested in anyone he sees as inferior. But when he finds someone worthwhile he generally maintains a level of politeness. The exception to this is Neku, his partner from Neku’s second Game, as he’s only too happy to offer an insult or mocking chuckle at Neku’s expense and has a way of getting under Neku’s skin that rivals even the stresses of the Game.
History: [SPOILERS FOR THE WORLD ENDS WITH YOU LIKE YOU HAVE NO IDEA] Joshua first met Neku during his second Game and claimed him as a partner before the boy could find someone more powerful. At first he came off as an impudent twit, eager to point out Neku’s flaws and lead them in a completely different direction from the Game’s goal. In fact, it seemed like he didn’t have any interest in playing the Game to begin with. Then he proved to have a connection to the enigmatic Mr. H, who had helped Neku in the past, and Neku discovered that Joshua was looking to jack Shibuya and challenge the Composer directly. It also seemed like Joshua was connected to Neku’s death, and over time Neku realized that his own partner had killed him. It also became apparent down the line that Joshua was playing the Game alive, which was totally against the rules in the first place. The two of them faced off against Sho Minamimoto, the bizarre Game Master of the time, and Neku realized then that Sho had killed him and not Joshua. Joshua and Neku both were assaulted by a massive attack, but Joshua thrust his partner aside and bore the full brunt.
But the truth is, Joshua didn’t die in that attack, because he was transported to another dimension of his own will. Because the Composer can do that. Sho’s attack would have eliminated not only the Joshua of that dimension, but every Joshua in every dimension in existence, so it was paramount that he get away if he wanted to preserve himself—and he risked that when he stepped in to protect Neku, whom he also couldn’t afford to lose as his proxy in a Game between himself and his Conductor, Megumi Kitaniji. This Game would decide the fate of Shibuya, as the Composer had deemed it too corrupt to continue existing and Megumi had wagered his own existence in order to save it from destruction.
Neku didn’t discover all this until he reached the Room of Reckoning, where Joshua reappeared and Kitaniji fused with the Composer to make his Noise form even more powerful. Neku remembered then that Sho had come to kill Joshua in the Realground back when Neku was still alive, and once Joshua had chased him off, Neku’s partner had, in fact, turned his weapon on Neku—and provided him with the extra Player pin that had immunized him against Kitaniji’s mind control. Joshua then revealed himself as the Composer, admitted to taking out Sho earlier (who had stormed the premises with the silly notion of becoming Composer himself), and challenged Neku to one final Game. It was a simple duel—both would fire at the count of three, and the one to hit and kill would become the Composer and to do Shibuya what he would. But Neku couldn’t bring himself to shoot Joshua, one of the few people he’d grown close to over his time in Shibuya in spite of their constant arguing, and lost. But in the end, Sanae Hanekoma swayed Joshua back into sparing Shibuya, and Neku awoke in the scramble for the last time.
Role: Second Year Student
Weaknesses: Turncoats, physically weak, caustic personality
Strengths: Precocious, sly, phenomenal power
Weapons/Magic: Cellphone, cosmic powers
How did you come to be at the academy?: Followed Neku~. He’s lost without me, don’t you know.
Custom Title: Yoshiya Kiryu
RP Sample: Ah, school.
Joshua had never particularly liked school. It was, for the most part, a flawed institution: preparing students for a world full of forgiving teachers and extra credit and do-overs, not malice and corruption and permanence. Not that the world was all bad, but the simplistic, abridged version found in the scholastic notion of life was more like a Disney caricature.
Neku understood this now. Joshua had made sure of it. The Game wasn’t fair, not any more fair than life itself, and Neku had been exposed to its harshness—shaped by its fluctuations and changed from a sullen teenager full of angst and hate into a worthwhile person.
And why, after all that, would Joshua entrust his proxy’s education to anyone but himself~?
